JACKSON, Tenn. — With pencils sharpened and classrooms stocked, experts say bidding farewell to the long days of summer can be challenging for students. With classes starting Monday in the Jackson-Madison County School System, kids are taking advantage of the last few days of summer break. Students like Jayden Buchanan, a rising sixth-grader said they’re excited about the new school year. “I get to meet new friends, new people and new classes,” he said. Parents told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News they’ve enjoyed the break but that it’s time for students to hit the books. “Once he gets in there, he’s smiling and going down the hallway and everything,” James Wilbourn said. Some students say it’s tough to go from long days of summer to hours inside learning. “We don’t get to sleep in anymore and we always have to study,” Buchanan said. Parents said making sure children get enough sleep is one of the biggest challenges through the school year. Wilbourn said it’s especially hard for his son to go to sleep while the summer days are long. Experts recommend starting a bedtime routine in the weeks leading up to the new school year. They said going to bed at a set time each night or gradually going to bed earlier also will help. Doctors said limiting screen time and avoiding caffeinated drinks also could make bedtime easier. Some students said a good school year happens when students are both physically and mentally ready for each day. “Go to sleep early and eat breakfast,” Buchanan recommends.
