CHESTER COUNTY, Tenn. — Complaints about a political cartoon lead the publisher of the Chester County Independent newspaper to pen an apology. The cartoon showed tombstones engraved with minor traffic offenses. Scott Whaley says in his 50 years with the paper this could be one of its worst black eyes. “I stand by my staff and take the ultimate responsibility. This cartoon was in bad taste. We pledge to do a better job for our readers,” Whaley said in part in the apology that ran in the paper. Whaley says the Independent has discontinued its use of the cartoon service and will no loner publish any type of cartoon material.
