Sheriff’s office to crack down on DUI enforcement

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Starting this week, the sheriff’s office is cracking down on DUI enforcement in the days surrounding the Labor Day holiday. As part of the statewide Booze It & Lose It campaign, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office to step up DUI enforcement from Aug. 19 to Sep. 7, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. “Too many people think their actions don‘t affect anybody else,” Sheriff John Mehr states in the release. “They know it’s illegal. They know it’s wrong. But they do it anyway — they make decisions as if those statistics just can’t happen to them.” The state had 6,645 known alcohol-related crashes in 2014, according to the release. That equates to an average of 18 people making the decision to drink and drive each day. A single DUI can cost an individual $5,000 or more in addition to jail time, the release states.
