JACKSON, Tenn.-A West Tennessee family is lucky to be alive after they said a gunman nearly killed them on their drive home Wednesday. The family said it was a random act of violence done by a kid who they thought was just crossing the street. “It sounded like a big ol’ boom and at that point all I could do was remain calm,” said Tabitha Douglas, a passenger in the car. It was a scary afternoon for a Beech Bluff family Wednesday. The family said they were on their home traveling on East Chester Street when suddenly things took a turn. “A young man was standing at the end of the driveway and when my car approached him he took a couple of steps and shot at me,” Tammy Douglas said. The Jackson Police Department said the juvenile was carrying a BB gun, but Douglas said it sounded a lot louder than a toy. “It was like an explosion that came through the driver’s window and then we just felt the wind and the glass shatter,” Tammy Douglas said. The Douglas family said the juvenile as just 6 feet away from the car, when all of a sudden he pulled what looked to be a gun, and shot. If you are going down the road anywhere you need to watch out for your surroundings,” Tabitha Douglas said. Douglas said as soon as she realized what happened she sped down East Chester and dialed 911. Douglas said within minutes police had the juvenile in custody where she positively identified him. “I’m just very blessed to be here I obviously had guardian angels watching over me yesterday,” Tammy Douglas said. Douglas said she recently had changed her route home to East Chester after a safety scare on North Parkway. “I just think they see to many things on TV and it doesn’t seem real that you can take a life and what could happen,” Tammy Douglas said.
