JACKSON, Tenn. — Leaders with a local safety resource for women shared their thoughts Wednesday about a suspect in the Vanderbilt rape case attended a local college. It was announced Tuesday that Maryland native Brandon Banks, who is now awaiting trial on five counts of aggravated rape, is currently enrolled at Lane College. Banks was seen Wednesday in football gear on the school’s practice field. Officials with Wo/Men’s Resource and Rape Assistance Program, or WRAP, who have long worked closely with the east Jackson school, say most of all they’re shocked by the news and that they’re worried others will take the wrong message from the school’s decision. “That life goes on as normal for the perpetrator, particularly if the perpetrator is a member of a protected class, and by that I mean athletes in contact sports,” said Daryl Chansuthus, executive director of WRAP. Organizers at WRAP say they have a great relationship with the school and have had great success working with them to promote goals of safety among their students. No trial date has been scheduled for Banks.
