HENDERSON,Tenn. — For many school-age children, the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 are a history lesson. At East Chester Elementary School in Henderson, Mrs. Rosemary McKnight’s second graders spent Friday morning reading books on what happened during the devastating attack. “I drew the Twin Towers because that’s what we learned today,” Sara Walker said. Student Alli Grace Howell wrote a page in her spiral notebook of what she said happened on the historic Tuesday morning. Howell questions why someone would drive planes into the skyscrapers. McKnight’s class also read a poem of how Lady Liberty stood strong while debris filled the streets of New York. Students learning how first responders rushed to ground zero refer to them as “superheroes.” “Because they saved our country from those four bad guys who crashed into the buildings,” Walker said. Students made thank you cards for West Tennessee’s finest. “Because they take care of our country and they help us,” Brenlee Burgess said. Aside from the special history lesson, school staff said they try to promote patriotism daily.
