JACKSON, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Health is asking residents across the state to wear white, purple and teal Friday for suicide awareness. The Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network says days like this can help take a stand against the silence and stigma surrounding suicide. Organizers say having prevention awareness for suicide can help save lives. “We know that it’s a topic most people don’t like to discuss and so we wanted to find a way to raise awareness without making anybody have that discussion,” said Amy DoLinky with the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network. The most recent numbers on suicide rates in the Volunteer State show 956 people committed suicide in 2012.
