GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — More than 100 firefighters took to the streets Saturday to install free smoke alarms — and they set a state record in the process. The final numbers are in, and the volunteers installed a total of 777 smoke alarms across the county, making them the official state record holders, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. That figure doesn’t include alarms installed from call-backs or by people who went out later that day. Every county and city fire department in the county teamed up to give away free smoke alarms to those in need. Officials say since the program began there’s been a 23 percent decrease in fire deaths in the state.
