Study examines effectiveness of Tennessee’s pre-K program

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Gov. Bill Haslam says he plans to review data from a recent study on the effectiveness of Tennessee’s pre-kindergarten program.
The study released Monday shows positive effects of the program are significant at first, but fade out in early elementary grades.
The Republican governor told reporters following an event in Nashville Monday morning that he hasn’t had a chance to thoroughly examine the data, but plans to “dig into it deeper.”
Haslam says he believes “quality pre-K, with good follow up, can have an impact.”
The five-year, $6 million study was launched in 2009. It’s a coordinated effort between Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development, and the Tennessee Department of Education.
