Selmer 4th of July
Selmer kicked off its 4th of July festivities with their annual Freedom Festival, Monday. “We’ve got freedom. I’ve been to places you don’t have freedom,” said Richard Fleming, a veteran. The festival included a parade that started in front of the courthouse and ended in the Selmer City Park. Veterans walked in front of the parade with flags. “I’ve seen where woman are not treated right. They have to wear a hood over their face,” said Fleming about other countries. He said the day reminded him of all the people that have died for freedom. “We’ve had people (die) during the Revolutionary War, World War II, World War I, Korean War, Vietnam and no Afghanistan,” said Fleming. One veteran participating in the parade fears citizens are beginning to take their independence for granted. “Not many people out for this parade. The ones that were out didn’t stand up, salute the flag or take their hat off for it,” said James Beck, a veteran. Whether or not they knew exactly what it took for them to enjoy freedoms experience today, it did not stop the young people from celebrating Independence Day in their own way.
