Prepping Your Home for Vacation
Authorities said with the craze of the social media outlet, Facebook, people have become comfortable with updating their status to let their friends and family know there every move. But police say be careful. “They know when you’re leaving. They know when you’re coming back,” said Lieutenant Mike Johnson with the Jackson Police Department. Lieutenant Johnson said home burglars use the social media outlets to track the moves of homeowners leaving for vacation. He said vacationers unknowingly post information forgetting how many people have access to their post. “Once you put that information out there, it’s out there,” said Lieutenant Johnson. He said there are other things you can do to protect you home, such as, packing your luggage in your car at night, leaving valuables with friends and having a house sitter watch your home. “The biggest mistake people make is leaving a large amount of guns in their home,” said Lieutenant Johnson. He said it is best to lock these items up or leave them with a trusted friend or family members.
