Gibson County Budget Details
Gibson County officially approved a new budget for the fiscal year on Monday, bringing forth a few changes. As proposed earlier, the commission approved a three percent salary increase for all county employees. Mayor Tom Witherspoon says this pay raise was promised about three years ago, and he believes now is the appropriate time to act on it. Also in the new budget, a $200,000 investment in industrial development that Mayor Witherspoon and commissioners hope will bring new jobs to the area. “If we lower the unemployment rate in our county to just what the national average is, then we won’t have a deficit budget. Give the working people of this county the opportunity to spend and they’ll spend their way out of this for us. We’ve just gotta get them back to work and this budget does that,” said Mayor Witherspoon. This budget covers the fiscal year that began on July 1and ends June 30, 2012.
