Memphis Lays Off More Teachers
A second round of teacher layoffs has put 47 Memphis City Schools educators out of work.
Most of those laid off Tuesday are English, history, social studies or vocational teachers, according to The Commercial Appeal.
The cuts bring to more than 250 the number of employees laid off this summer by the city school system. There were 95 vocational instructors let go in June and 127 managers and clerical workers dismissed.
School system officials said earlier this year there was a $100 million shortfall for the next year.
Teachers union president Keith Williams says the cuts could mean there won’t be enough teachers to cover the class schedule.
School officials say some of those laid off could be rehired to cover retirements and resignations by other teachers.
