Election Controversy
A Lexington man running for city alderman, position 7 has been disqualified from the race due to a residence technicality. The Henderson County election board voted Monday night 3-2 to disqualify Mark Stanfill. The vote stems from a residency law that says the candidate must have resided in the city limits for at least the past 12 months. Stanfill says he typically resides in his apartment in the city limits. But last year he says he moved out to his home in Henderson County for about a year to recover from intense back surgery. He returned back to his city apartment two months ago. He also says he checked with election officials multiple times to make sure his residency would not be an issue. Each time he says he was told everything was “fine.” “I think when a person, whether they have to go to a hospital or nursing home, when they leave their home for medical purposes that shouldn’t count against them,” said Stanfill. When we asked officials with the Henderson County Election Commission about the Board’s decision. they chose not to comment.
