Jackson Oaks Resident Accidentally, Fatally Shoots Himself
Jackson police are calling a deadly shooting inside Jackson Oaks, a center for independent and assisted living, an accident. Police and EMS were called to the north Jackson facility around 2:30 p.m., Thursday. Claude Vantreese, 68, was pronounced dead at a local hospital just after 4 p.m. Police say Vantreese was found outside, a few feet away from the back door of his apartment. A gun was lying near him. Prior to officers arriving, staff members say Vantreese told them he had been cleaning his gun when the shooting happened. Investigators reported finding a cleaning kit inside his apartment. He suffered a single shot to the left side of his chest. Investigators say there does not appear to be any evidence of criminal activity. No one else was injured. The public relations manager for Brookdale Senior Living, the parent company of Jackson Oaks, says Jackson Oaks has a no firearms policy. Holly Botsford added, “As a result of this situation, we are working to re-educate our independent living residents on this policy.”
