Abandoned MInes Shuttered in KY

Thirty-seven abandoned coal mines have been closed at the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area straddling the Tennessee-Kentucky border.

Using federal stimulus funds, the mines were barred with steel gates, wire netting and closed using other methods.

According to a news release from the recreation area, the mines still could pose a danger to the public such as roof collapse and blowouts due to water accumulation inside.

The mines had been used before the park was established in 1974. Officials said they had been abandoned for more than 70 years.
