Humboldt Follow-Up
Neighbors of an 81-year old woman found dead in Humboldt said they do not think foul play was involved in her death. “I don’t think anyone came out and put her in the hole,” said neighbor, Harold Fair. A family member found Fannie Campbell in a hole in her backyard in the 700-block of Elliot Street in Humboldt, Friday. Her family said she had a history of mental illness. “She used to have one of those scooters and she used to get in it in the morning and go to Super D Drugs,” said neighbor, James McKnight. Neighbors said Campbell attended church, faithfully and was liked by everyone in the area. “When I first saw her she had a cup digging it out. I guess she may have been cleaning it out,” said Fair referring to the hole investigators found Campbell’s body. Fair said his wife took Campbell to the store to buy the shovel earlier this year. Fair said he never asked Campbell her reason for digging the hole. “She was the type that would tell you to mind your own business if you asked her what she was doing,” said Fair. “The temperature being hot like this, she probably just got exhausted, lost her footing and just fell in there,” he adds. Fair said he had seen Campbell digging in the hole in the past. “I thought she had passed out. The upper part of her body was over in the hole, legs and stuff on top, but she finally moved and got out of it,” said Fair. He said his wife saw her digging, Thursday. Campbell’s body has been taken to Memphis for an autopsy. Police urge anyone that may have seen Campbell late Thursday, July 14, or early Friday, July 15, to call Humboldt Police Department or Tennessee Bureau of Investigations at 1(800) TBI-FIND.
