They are among the hottest jobs in West Tennessee, but with a heat index more than 100 degrees, roofers and asphalt layers said it has made their job more challenging. “It seems like it is 130 degrees out here sometimes,” said Luke Stegar with the Jackson Street Department. Stegar said the asphalt comes from the plant at a temperature more than 300 degrees. “It’s normally 200 to 250 degrees on the truck,” said Arthur Chism with the Jackson Street Department. Both workers said supervisors take the heat into consideration and allow them to take breaks when needed. Roofers said the heat index makes their job challenging, as well. “The tar and every thing’s black up there, so it just attracts heat,” said Brian Gay of Affordable Home Solutions. Gay said his roofers changed their work patterns in extreme heat and work in shorter shifts. “There is no air up there, most of the time,” he adds. Workers with the street department said their bodies have become somewhat immune to the heat, but medical experts warn they should still take precautions.
