Thieves Target Store and ATM
The BP Gas Station along Dupree Road in Brownsville was targeted by thieves Thursday night. Inside you can not tell because store manager Omar Hassan said has gotten his shop back in order and is open for business. “We need to open the door for business. We have no other choice. Even if the whole thing is gone, we had to open it,” added Hassan. Hassan said the suspects got in by crawling through the air conditioning vent from the back of the building. Then he says the suspects immediately made their mark on the security camera. “They took the monitor with them. They took the DVR too. We can’t see anything. We can’t watch anything,” said Hassan. Next, Hassan believes the thieves dragged the ATM into the kitchen and stole about $4,000 from inside. The damage to the machine is what will hurt Hassan the most. “I am waiting for the owner of the ATM machine. I think that it will cost about $50,000 to $100,000,” added Hassan. Not only did the thieves hit up the ATM, they grabbed all of the money from inside the cash register, about 25 cartons of cigarettes and a few hundred dollars from the back office. “Probably gonna be more than one person. Can’t say for sure right now, but they probably spent quite some time in the store doing what they did,” said Lieutenant Chuck Willis of the Brownsville Police Department. Police said as of now they have no leads. But Hassan is hopeful the people responsible will be brought to justice. Hassan is hopeful that insurance will help pay for much of the damage, including the ATM machine. If you have any information contact the Brownsville Police Department at 731-772-1215.
