McCarley Family Speaks Out

When friends and family want to visit Stephanie McCarley, 22, they have to sign in at the Chester County Jail where she is being held, facing charges of first degree murder and aggravated child abuse. “You do not want to believe that someone can and is able to pull something like this unless something was wrong mentally,” said McCarley’s cousin, Destiny Cotton. According to autopsy results, McCarley’s 6-month-old son, Clever died from complications of chronic mal-nutrition in late April. In other words, he starved to death. “She is not some cold, hard killer,” said Cotton. “She was a very outgoing person.” Besides growing up in a low income family, Cotton said McCarley never showed signs of mental instability. However, she did have a tendency to disappear, especially when she began dating Devin Jay Davis, 33, of Chester County. Davis is also in custody, facing the same charges. “I felt that she was not entitled to associate with us anymore, period,” said Cotton. After leaving her family in Mississippi to live with Davis in Chester County, Cotton said McCarley got pregnant and had a baby, but the family did not know about it until they met the newborn at McCarley’s father’s funeral last November. “She was sad from her father’s funeral but it’s not like she was too depressed to be a mother,” said one family member, who wished to remain anonymous. Now pregnant again, family members are saving up money to raise McCarley’s fourth child and take back her 2-year-old and 4-year-old who are in state custody. “We are not sure where they are but I want to let them know we love y’all and we are trying to get y’all home,” said one of McCarley’s cousins. McCarley and Davis remain in custody at the Chester County jail in lieu of a $250,000 bond.
