Chief Irons Appeals Firing
ABC 7 Eyewitness News has now learned that Bill Irons, the Bolivar Police Chief recently fired by Mayor Barrett Stevens has appealed the decision, saying he was wrongfully terminated. Attendees at Friday’s city council meeting said the council selected members to serve on a committee which will determine whether Irons was wrongfully fired. The board is said to have appointed city council members Larry McKinnie, Tracy Byrum and David Rhea to look into the matter. “My understanding was that if they disagree with the mayor’s decision they could overturn it, said Karen T. Fleet, who attended Friday’s meeting. “If they did not, then the it would stand and I believe the mayor said that would be a final decision.” ABC 7 Eyewitness News hope to confirm all this with Mayor Stevens, but he was out of town Monday and said he would not release any information until he returned. Chief Irons said he is in the process of hiring an attorney.
