Memphis Settles School Funding Squabble
The Memphis school board has agreed on a schedule of payments from the city that would send students back to school on time on Aug. 8.
The board last week voted to delay the start of classes in a fight with the city over funding
On Tuesday night, it approved a plan by an 8-0 vote that would provide the board $12 million by Aug. 5.
Roughly $68 million more would come in monthly installments. The deal was the result of negotiations by Mayor A C Wharton and Board President Martavius Jones.
The City Council must approve the budget plan on Aug. 2 to make the deal final.
The Memphis City Schools board last week said it would delay the start of school indefinitely if it didn’t receive $55 million from the city.
