Lexington Aldermen Still Mulling Budget

After three months of budget meetings, Lexington aldermen still have not come to an agreement. The city is facing a $1.2 million shortfall for this fiscal year, which already began on July 1. Mayor Bobby Dyer says no decision will be an easy one for the aldermen. Their options include major service cuts, and possibly job cuts or tax increases. If a budget is not finalized by October 1, the state would have the right to withhold funding for schools. Last year, the aldermen passed the budget just two days before this deadline and used what the mayor calls “one time money.” “When you don’t add additional revenue and when you already cut as much as you feel like you can cut and provide the services people want, then it puts you in a terrible dilemma.” Mayor Dyer and the city aldermen meet Tuesday night to look over the mayor’s proposed budget.
