First Citizens Bank in Union City is where deputies said a woman saved the lives of seven children who had been kidnapped by Terry Nichols. “One of the tellers from First Citizens Bank in Union City called us and said the van was sitting over there in the drive through window, waiting for it to open,” said Sheriff Jerry Vastbinder. Monday night, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued an Amber Alert across west Tennessee, looking for 51-year-old, Terry Nichols and a van full of children. They said on Tuesday, he went to Missouri to pick up his 17-year-old niece, and her three-month-old baby that he fathered. “I don’t think there are words to describe how a mom would feel in a situation like that,” said Anitra Hayre who lives in Union City. “I don’t think he really understands the capacity of the situation. His mental capacity is not all there,” added Sheriff Vastbinder. Deputies said Nichols has a sixth grade education and can barely read and write. On Wednesday, they said he picked up his three teenage kids who lived in Obion County and his girlfriend’s two toddlers.”We were pinging his cell phone through the provider. He was just east of Mobile, Alabama,” added Sheriff Vastbinder. Officials lost service, Monday evening. Nowhere to be found, Nichols drove back to Tennessee, to stock up on cash. Officials allege Nichols wanted to take the kids on vacation, so he sat and waited for the bank to open in the van with this kids. “They were able to get him out on his own. The children were all taken from the van and taken inside the bank,” explained Sheriff Vastbinder. Officials said all of the children are safe and are in the state’s custody. Nichols is charged with two counts of kidnapping and will face a judge next Tuesday. He is being held at the Obion County Sheriff’s Department without bond.
