FDA Cracking Down On Lazy Cakes
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on the sale and manufacture of a popular brownie sold in convenience stores. The FDA recently sent a letter to HBB, a Memphis-based company that makes “Lazy Cakes.” The agency wants to ban the sale of the cakes because they contain melatonin, a hormone that makes you fall asleep. Cashier Stephanie Duncan told ABC 7 Eyewitness News that Lazy Cakes are a top seller at her store on Old Medina Road. “We sell a lot of them,” Duncan said. “We go through two or three cases a month.” Jackson resident Perry Ridenhour does not believe people should be buying the brownies from gas stations before they get behind the wheel. “If you’re going out on the interstate or driving, that may be a danger,” Ridenhour said. The maker of Lazy Cakes has about nine days left to correct the violation. HBB’s CEO said the company is taking “immediate steps to address the concerns.”
