The Madison County Commission voted down a proposal by local trucking company Phil Garside, Inc. to rezone a portion of northeast Madison County so it could expand. Phil Garside, Inc. asked the board to rezone the north side of New Deal Road, just west of Joy Lane from forestry and agriculture to general industrial, which would allow the trucking company to move large trucks through the area and build a new truck terminal. Through their attorney the owners argued that they could maintain their workforce the area. However, dozens of people who live in the area have petitioned against the change. They say the roads cannot handle the wear and it could be dangerous for families and schools in the area. “I’m appreciative of what they did for us,” said Paul Linsey who lives in the area. “Is it the right thing to do. They made a wise decision. I believe they voted for safety instead of finances.” Attorney for the Garsides, Greg Minton said, “We are disappointed but are moving forward optimistically.” The Jackson-Madison Co. School District, Madison County Sheriff’s Department and Madison County Highway Department went on record opposing the zoning change.
