MS Officials Warn Wireless Internet Users
The state attorney general is warning those who use a wireless system for Internet connection to protect themselves by using a password.
The Sun Herald reports state officials have made about 60 arrests this year in cases alleging someone else used an innocent person’s wireless system to download child pornography.
A wireless system that is not password-protected can allow neighbors or anyone nearby to detect and use the system. Most wireless routers have a software feature that can be enabled to require the use of a password to connect to the Internet.
Attorney General Jim Hood says child-pornography investigations can determine which computer downloaded porn, but the legal process creates considerable inconvenience for the innocent person whose wireless connection was used to commit a crime.
