Local Moms Making Natural Soaps & Salves
Two Girls and a Goat. That is the name of the soap product made by Mandy Holmes and Ashley Bausch, originally designed for family use, but now becoming a local hit. “We started making Christmas gifts last Christmas, just to give to friends and family,” said Holmes. “And people really liked it and asked us if we’d make more and sell it.” And so began ‘Made on Acorn Hill.’ The two moms use all-natural products, keeping it as local as possible. “Ashley has the goats at her house, dairy goats, so we use their milk to make 10 different types of soap,” said Holmes. “We’re doing everything ourselves. My husband designed our logo and our labels, we’re printing everything ourselves, we’re wrapping everything, we’re putting our stickers on ourselves. We use the milk in the goats – it’s local, we also use Tennessee beeswax.” With nine children between the two families, all of their soaps and salves were invented to suit their needs. “My son, Josiah, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at birth,” said Bausch. “Because we know what you put on your skin is as important as what you eat, because it absorbs into your skin, we came up with ‘Breathe Easy’ for him especially, just to help him breathe when he’s congested.” While the two are finding success as business women, they say being mothers is still the most important job. “First and foremost, we’re both moms and we both stay at home,” said Homes. “So that’s really where our hearts are and we feel called to be.” Bausch and Holmes say as of now, neither of them are taking home paychecks. Instead, they are putting all of their profit back into making more products.
