Memphis, Shelby School Merger Moves Forward
The boards of the Memphis City Schools and the Shelby County Schools have voted unanimously to approve an agreement to merge the boards by Oct. 1.
At separate meetings on Thursday, the school boards said a merged school system will benefit the children being educated.
The city school board also chose its five appointees to the combined board, according to The Commercial Appeal
The 16 members now serving on the separate school boards will constitute most of the combined board of 23 members. Seven new seats are being created and voters will chose who fills them in the August 2012 election. The schools will be merged at the beginning of the 2013-2014 academic year and the city and county school board members will leave the combined board then
