Members of the Lambuth community said the day they have all awaited is finally here. Today marked the first day of classes for students at the University of Memphis-Lambuth. “It’s very nice. I used to go to Memphis and it kind of has that homey feeling,” said University of Memphis-Lambuth student, Cliff Wallis. University officials said more than 350 students have enrolled this semester, most of which are taking evening classes. Native Jackson students say it is the “best of both worlds.” “You know it’s in Jackson. I’m from Jackson….feels good to be in Jackson,” said Wallis. Lambuth residents were on campus greeting students with free pizza and candy and helped them navigate around campus. “We live right across the street from the University of Memphis now and we’re just delighted that they’re here and just want to welcome them,” said Lambuth resident, Brenda Nichols. With degree programs in education, nursing and business offered, university officials said more concentrations will be added in January. “Probably English, psychology, criminal justice…just several different ones. Anything we have on the main campus we can do here. We probably will phase them in as we have the student interest to do so,” said Dr. Dan Lattimore, dean of the University of Memphis-Lambuth.
