Haywood Co. Budget Planners Meet Again
With just three weeks until a balanced budget is due to the state, Haywood County commissioners met again, Wednesday night in hopes of passing a budget. But once again left no deal on the table. The commissioners agreed on very little in terms of ways to trim spending. A few cost saving measures they seem to favor, forcing every county employee to take one, unpaid day off a month and eliminating five unfilled positions at the county jail. But leader said those alone, just are not enough. “I hope we’re gonna pass a budget by October 1 because things are going to get real ugly if we don’t have a budget passed by October 1 because the state’s going to start withholding money from our local board of education,” said Haywood County Mayor Franklin Smith. Haywood County commissioners are set to convene Thursday afternoon at 4.
