Shelby County Cities Looking At Own Schools

Two more suburban Memphis cities have approved hiring a consulting firm to explore establishing their own school districts.

In separate meetings Monday night, the Collierville and Germantown boards of mayor and aldermen unanimously approved contracts with Southern Education Strategies, according to The Commercial Appeal

The charters of both cities include language that would allow them to form school districts.

Arlington officials approved a contract last week with the same firm.

Officials of the suburban cities say they want to understand the implications of forming their own municipal school districts, separate from the consolidating Memphis and Shelby County school systems.

Bartlett and Millington are also looking at hiring consultants.
