Medina Working On New City Complex
The city of Medina is getting closer to breaking ground on a new municipal complex. Medina Mayor Vance Coleman said they are running out of space. “We are the fourth fastest growing city in the state of Tennessee,” Coleman said. “Since the last census we’ve grown about 280 percent.” For the past three-and-a-half years, the city has been trying to build a new municipal complex, which would house the mayor’s office, police and fire departments, among others. But they have had to wait because of a sluggish economy. “Hopefully they’ll start breaking ground in three or four months,” Coleman said. The new complex will be built on 1.4 acres of land. The city was originally supposed to have more, but officials recently decided they did not want to spend more money to build a road. “There were a few little glitches in it,” Coleman said. “[The developer] wanted us to extend the road on out and we decided that was not something we wanted to do. He decided then that he didn’t want to sell us the land.” The mayor said that will not impact the new building too much. City employees are looking forward to more parking, more space and a safer working environment. “I’m so excited,” city recorder Kim Gilley said. “We have worked so hard in letting the public know how valuable this building is.” City leaders said the building will cost $2.3 million at most, with the money coming from a Rural Development Loan from the state.
