Members of the Jackson-Madison County chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution want you to let freedom ring. Friday marked the 224th anniversary of the signing of our nation’s constitution and members of the organization let there bells toll on the steps of the Madison County courthouse as part of the Bells Across America campaign. The group is encouraging are schools, churches, businesses and even individuals to ring bells, Friday. ABC 7 Eyewitness News spoke with organizers on the importance of the event. “When it was announced that the constitution had been ratified, the church bells peeled and people were shooting off rifles and cannons, so there was a lot of noise,” said Jackie Utley with the Madison-County Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. “So, we were ringing our bells today to celebrate that.” Utley told ABC 7 Eyewitness News the celebration is usually held on September 17 when the constitution was signed, but because this year’s commemoration fell on a weekend, members held the ceremony a day early.
