Madison Co. Landfill Debate Continues
A controversial landfill was once again a hot topic at the Madison County Commission agenda on Monday, as commissioners continue to vote in favor of the landfill zoning. Local NAACP president Harrell Carter requested that the commissioners bring the issue of re-zoning the area back up for discussion. But, after a vote of six to 18, the issue remained tabled. The landfill, which is still in the beginning phases, has been in the Denmark community for about two years now, and residents are not staying quiet about it. “The noise and the traffic and our roads, they’ve taken a beating,” said resident Ronald Nelson. Commissioners, however; said they voted against the motion because of a pending lawsuit filed by the landfill’s owner Bill McMillen. “I don’t want to revisit a decision until that legal dilemma has been resolved,” said Commissioner Jerry Bastin. When asked if he believed allowing the landfill to be zoned in the area in the first place, Bastin replied that they were possibly misinformed on the issue.
