Former Bolivar City Councilwoman Brenda Woods was in a circuit court Monday. She is asking for a retrial on charges where she was found guilty of voter fraud. “I am looking forward to my day in court,” said Woods. Woods was convicted last year of helping convicted felons vote illegally. Judge Weber McCraw did not allow the hearing to proceed, Monday, due to what he called either a lack of preparation or a manipulative maneuver on the part of Woods’ attorney, Michael Robbins. “Certainly I have not engaged in direct manipulation of the court or the prosecution or anyone else,” said Robbins. He said the delay in filing a motion until Monday morning was due to research and new developments related to the case. “We’re trying to find some error that occurred in the trial that would be ground for reversing and granting a new trial,” he adds. Robbins said there are serious material issues related to the case which could lead to a retrial. Judge Weber said Woods deserved a speedy trial which he said is in the best interest of both her and the state. She is due back in court Thursday.
