Haywood County Votes on New Budget

With just days to spare, the Haywood County Commission passed a budget, Monday night. By a vote of 14-6, commissioners said yes to a budget plan, which keeps them out of trouble with the state and avoids a multi-million dollar cut in funds for their schools. For months the commission has struggled to find the best way to balance their budget, finally coming to the decision to raise the property tax rate to $2.58. But even with a balanced budget passed, Mayor Franklin Smith says county leaders’ job is far from over. “There will be a lot of work done on this budget,” he said. “There will be some cuts probably made on somethings.” Mayor Smith said just getting a budget passed was a big step. It will now be sent to Nashville for state approval. Their deadline was October 1.
