Sheriff Talks About Shooting Investigation
Madison County Deputy Nathaniel Shoate is expected to return to work Friday after being involved with a shooting on West Park Place, Tuesday afternoon. According to authorities, Chaney fled to his mother’s home after shooting Daphne Kenner, 18, and a 21-year-old male passenger and car jacking a family of three. “I seen the guy riding a van. He was riding real fast with police cars behind him. He jumped out the van and into the house, and they ran right behind him,” said resident Roy Graves. The chain of events inside the house has Chaney’s family questioning Shoate’s actions. “We do know this. that there was an exchange of gun fire. We do know that Mr. Chaney fired his weapon..We do know that Officer Shoats deputy fired his weapon there in the residence,” said Sheriff David Woolfork. Authorities are still investigating who shot first. “We do know at some point there was a struggle. The investigation suggest that Officer Shoate did in fact and retrieve the weapon during that struggle,” said Woolfork. Some families members stated that they feel the deputies did not handle the situation correctly. “Deputy Shoate was attempting to stop the threat. It’s part of our policy to defend his life or the life of another person, and he did act in my opinion within the context of this policy,” Woolfork stated.
