Mercer Residents Meet to Try and Save Post Office

Mercer residents met with Postal Service leaders to see what they could do to save their one and only post office. Mercer’s post office is one of 62 across the state that is a part of a study to see if the office is really needed in the area. “The post office has always served as a major center of any of the small town, and that’s why its been here all these years,” stated resident Billy King. The study has been inspired by a lack of revenue in the U.S Postal Service. If the study does not find Mercer’s post office as a necessity, Mercer will lose the century old facilty. “I’m hoping and praying we can save it ’cause we need it badly, especially for the elderly people,” stated resident Linda Hemby. According to officials, If the doors are shut, Mercer residents would have to commute to Denmark, Medon, or Jackson to get their mail. We’ll, we’re a small town. A small area and we’re all spread out so I feel like Medon would have an overload trying to service all these people,” stated Hemby. Officials stated if the Mercer post office shuts down, they will still provide delivery for mail. This option still serves a problem for residents with a P.O. box.
