Canstruction Awards Announced
The results are “in the can”, literally, for the annual competition benefiting the Regional Interfaith Association, or RIFA. Last week the 7th annual Canstruction competition got underway at the Old Hickory Mall. Teams assembled their best and most creative structures using only canned goods. The cans of food will now be donated to RIFA, which runs a year-round soup kitchen and helps feed those less fortunate across the area. Organizers said the competition is fun for the teams, but will countless families. “I think it makes us not take so much for granted, the things we have and realize that lots of people don’t have basic life necessities,” said Lisa Ragsdale, the winning team’s captain. “And so you get to think of it and it’s a fun, creative way to gather cans and get those to those less fortunate.” “This is just something that, you know, takes a little bit of time from us out of work and out of our families, but the community receives a great benefit out of it,” said Marietta Haywood, the winning team’s designer. This year’s first place winner in the Canstruction competition goes to Regional Hospital and Vaughn Associates Architects with their Spongebob Squarepants display.
