Military Medals Blocked From Auction

State officials want military veterans to know about a new law that prevents the sale of military medals and allows veterans and their families to reclaim lost medals.

State Sen. Andy Berke is holding an event in East Ridge on Thursday at American Legion Post 95 along with state Treasurer David Lillard and Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder to explain the measure that was passed into law earlier this year.

Berke said in a news release that unclaimed military medals held in safe deposit boxes were previously sold at auction and the proceeds were given to the state treasurer until the rightful owners could be found.

But the law now requires the state treasurer’s office to hold any abandoned military medals until the veteran or family members are located.
