Drug Court Celebrates Graduation
Jackson’s Drug Treatment Court celebrated graduation on Friday; making the completion of an intense 12 month program for participants. 11 graduates were recognized for being drug-free for one year. The 12-month program takes substance abuse offenders through treatments, A.A. meetings, and random drug tests for accountability with the goal of returning them to their communities drug and alcohol free. State Representative Johnny Shaw delivered the keynote address to graduates and guests. “People deserve a second chance. Many times people get on cocaine or methamphetamine, and instead of just throwing away the key, we’re giving people drug treatment. It’s not a handout but a “hand-up”, it’s hard, hard work and they must earn it,” said Judge Blake Anderson. Judge Anderson said the graduates are usually overjoyed, feel better, and are more focuses to make rational decisions. The drug treatment court has had 89 graduates since beginning in March 2003.
