Gibson County is now hiring. On Tuesday, county officials announced they have a new organization, which will bring hundreds of jobs or more to the county to help thousands of unemployed West Tennesseans, anxious to get back to work. The non-profit company, Vision Gibson, works with for-profit companies to recruit applicants and train them for the jobs those companies have available. The same group just recently brought 300 jobs to Perry County. Trenton resident Leslie Parker has been unemployed since March, but thanks to “Vision Gibson,” she will start a customer service job in a couple of weeks. “It feels great,” Parker said. “I really didn’t expect the ball to roll like this. It’s tremendous and I know it’s going to be a great opportunity for Gibson County.” County officials believe the program could not have come at a better time. According to Mayor Tom Witherspoon, right now more than 3,000 Gibson County residents are out of work. That is a 14 percent unemployment rate, about 5 percent above the national average. “We need this desperately,” Mayor Witherspoon said. “Above all else, this isn’t going to be the answer to all of our prayers, but it’s going to be a good answer to a certain percentage of people who need opportunity now. It’s going to be an answer to their prayers.” The company recruits for both full-time and part-time computer-related jobs, ranging from customer service, to computer programming. Many new hires will be able to work from home, but they will train at their facility on High Street in Trenton. “We look at a facility like this as being a one-room school house,” said Michael Dumont, executive director for “Vision Gibson.” “Any given time we’ll have people training in here, actually working in here and they could be working for several different companies at any particular time.” The company said the number of jobs depends on how many people apply. Applications are also available to residents in nearby counties. Training will start in a couple of weeks.
