One year after the 101 Travel Plaza was destroyed by a fire, the rebuilding efforts are still ongoing, and it is affecting many people in the community. The location used to provide fuel, groceries and a restaurant for locals and travelers along interstate 40. People in the community said they have to drive at least an extra 10 miles out of the way to get those amenities. Though the store’s owner said he hoped to open the store up much earlier, it probably will not happen until the first of next year. Residents said they are as anxious as ever. “I’ve got to get my gas somewhere or have it brought to me. When it was here, it was convenient. I could just drive down when I needed something,” said local resident Jerry McKee Owner Harrison Mullins said he never found out exactly what caused the fire, but plans on the store being better than before when it finally does reopen.
