Union City Fatal Fire
Officials said they had no idea Union City man Jerry Pope was still inside his duplex when they arrived at the scene. Just after three Saturday morning neighbors said they smelled smoke. The duplex was on fire, but witnesses stated not many flames were visible. Officials say the fire was mostly contained inside the home, and said 55-year-old Jerry Pope most likely died of smoke inhalation. Authorities said the family who was on the other side of the duplex got out safely. “They removed him to the front lawn and they started CPR, he was transported to the emergency room and he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” said Investigator Chris Cummings. Owners of the property say Pope had a kerosene heater, and they were told that is what caused the fire.
