Officials said 16 people lost their lives on Tennessee roadways during last year’s Thanksgiving Day holiday period; eight of them were not wearing their seat belts. That is why the Tennessee Highway Patrol will be hitting the roads along with the projected 900,000 plus Tennesseans. It seems all West Tennesseans agree on one thing, the holiday season brings out the worst in drivers. “Well everybody’s real excited for Thanksgiving Day, of course they want to hurry to grandma’s to have lunch,” said Mary Wilson. A few Jackson drivers said it seems people are more careless, even wild when driving on Thanksgiving. They blame it on being in a rush to where they are going. Troopers said they will be out in force this weekend; making sure drivers are being careful. And it is not just Thanksgiving Day travelers or Black Friday shoppers, it is hunting season too. Officials said to take extra caution no matter where you are. “There are some ignorant and rude people driving. Don’t’ let them bring you don’t to their level. If they cut you off just go on about your business, don’t let them upset you or make you be aggressive in return,” said Lt. Brad Wilbanks. The THP said there are 11 checkpoints scheduled around West Tennessee for Friday and Saturday; checking for driver sobriety, seat belts, and licenses.
