Just when you thought the shopping craze was over, there is a new shopping holiday just for the locals. Last year, American Express began promoting Small Business Saturday, and retailers say it is really catching on this year. It is designed to encourage people to support their local businesses while boosting the local economy. Because many of the smaller retailers get left in the dark on Black Friday, Small Business Saturday gives them a day all of their own. Local business owner Teresa Ide said it also gives customers certain services they can not get with the big guys. “I have people who come in and say, ‘I’m looking for this special gift’ and if we don’t find it, we’ll call them and say, ‘we found it’ and really kind of look out for our customers,” said Ide. Small Business Saturday is recognized nationwide. The majority of retailers 7 Eyewitness News spoke with in Jackson said they are running specials Saturday morning.
