Bonus Proposed for City of Jackson Workers
Workers for the City of Jackson may get and early holiday treat, if the Jackson City Council approves it next week. Consideration of a resolution for a salary supplement in the amount of $500 for the fiscal year 2012 for regular, full-time, active employees; regular, part-time employees who were hired on or before January 1, 2007, and who have received regular paychecks for the past three (3) years; and for retirees/beneficiaries of the pension plan in place prior to May 1, 1974. Mayor Jerry Gist said this would help off-set the lack of a cost of living raise this year. He also said the raise is the city’s way of thinking their workers. “When we approved the budget in July, a salary increase was not part of that budget and we wanted to wait and see if our taxes grew and to see where we were financially at the end of the year,” said Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist. “I think we’re in a position now to where we can go ahead and to where we can go a head and give a salary supplement to our employees.” If approved, the bonus, which would be included in workers’ December 8 paychecks, would cost the city just shy of $470,000, which the mayor said is available in the budget. The city council will vote on the resolution during its regular December meeting, which is set for next Tuesday.
