According to the Tennessee Department of Health, one out of every three Tennesseans has high blood pressure and 10 percent of the population is diabetic. Even if you do not have hypertension or diabetes, you may know someone with it. It is the time of the year for all the holiday treats. For those dealing with high blood pressure and diabetes, doctor urge those to enjoy the holidays with substitutes and in moderation. “I would say about a quarter of my patients are diabetic and about a third are hypertensive, so a pretty high proportion,” said Family Practice Physician Kellie Wilding. Doctors said there are three areas to be mindful of whether you are diabetic, hypertensive or know someone who has either. Health officials state you should avoid sugar and bake and cook with substitutes like Truvia and Splenda. Doctors state you should avoid alcohol as well. Health experts also urge patients to shy away from carbohydrates like white rice, pasta and potatoes. Last but not least, health officials recommend using spices and peppers to flavor foods instead of salt.
