The hallways of LeBonheur Children’s Hospital emergency department are a very busy place. “75 to 78,000 children come through the emergency department, which places it in the top 10 busiest emergency departments in the entire United States,” said Dr. Barry Gilmore, LeBonheur’s Emergency Department Medical Director. “A lot of things in the emergency department are time sensitive, meaning you have an injury, you have an illness and it needs to be either diagnosed or it needs to be addressed right away.” Timeliness and high quality care are two of the things for which the Trauma Center is known. One of only 33 in the country, LeBonheur is the only accredited Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center within a 400 mile radius. “If your child comes here to LeBonheur and is extremely sick, they’re going to be met with experts who have trained, and re-trained, and re-trained to take care of your child,” said Trauma Services Medical Director, Dr. Trey Eubanks. While adult trauma care is typically from car accidents, LeBonheur’s patients often face different types of injuries. “Most of their traumas are traumas of curiosity: the most common reason for admission is actually a fall.” said Dr. Eubanks. LeBonheur doctors say many of their patients are from rural areas, and that part of their job is to educate local doctors who may not commonly treat pediatric traumas. “It’s not just about taking care of a patient when they show up, or getting them to the operating room, or the ICU,” said Dr. Eubanks. “It’s also about working with the community to educate them on how to take care of trauma patients.”
